Low Maintenance Lawn

Project Status: On-going Management

Location: Annandale, MN

The Transformation: This 1-acre project in Annandale focused on a common challenge: a steep hillside leading down to a wetland area. Our client sought a solution that would minimize yard maintenance, reduce the amount of lawn requiring mowing, enhance wildlife viewing opportunities, and increase the overall natural beauty of their property.

Our Goals:

  • Create Minimum Maintenance Yard: Establishing a native plant community that requires significantly less upkeep than traditional turf grass.

  • Reduce Mowing Area: Converting a large portion of the hillside to a self-sustaining native landscape.

  • Create More Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: Enhancing habitat to attract a greater variety of wildlife.

  • Increase the Natural Beauty of the Property: Transforming a potentially challenging area into an aesthetically pleasing natural space.

Planted hillside

Project Timeline:

  • August 2024: Project Planted: The native plant installation was completed in August of last year.

  • Managing Next Two Summers: We are currently in the initial management phase, focusing on encouraging robust growth and establishment of the native planting over the next two summers.

Early Progress:

While still in the early stages, the native planting on this hillside is showing promising signs of establishment. We are actively managing the area to support the growth of the desired species and address any initial weed competition. We anticipate seeing a significant reduction in the area requiring mowing and an increase in the natural aesthetic of the property as the native plants mature. We're also optimistic about the potential for increased wildlife activity as the habitat develops.

Looking Ahead:

Our ongoing management over the next two summers will be crucial in ensuring the long-term success of this low-maintenance and beautiful native landscape. We'll continue to monitor its progress and implement any necessary strategies to help it thrive. Stay tuned for updates as this hillside transforms!
