Prairie on the Homestead
Project Status: On-going Management
Location: Becker, MN
The Transformation: We're continuing to see fantastic progress on this 15.25-acre project in Becker! This site, previously an old hay field with varying topography, has been undergoing a significant ecological transformation. Our goals were ambitious and multifaceted:
Enhance Wildlife Viewing/Hunting: Creating an environment that attracts and supports a diverse range of game and non-game species.
Boost Plant Diversity: Establishing a resilient and varied native plant community.
Reduce Soil Erosion: Stabilizing the land with native vegetation.
Reestablish a Healthy Ecosystem: Creating a self-sustaining and balanced natural area.
Improve Overall Property Appearance: Enhancing the aesthetic value of the land.
Increase Privacy: Establishing natural screening along property lines and the roadway.
Project Timeline Recap:
Fall 2022 - Summer 2023: Site Preparation Complete: Extensive work was done to prepare the ground for native planting.
Winter 2022: Selective Tree Removal: Targeted removal of certain trees to optimize the habitat.
Spring 2023: Tree Planting: Introduction of native tree species to enhance diversity and structure.
August 2023: Prairie Planting: Seeding of a diverse native prairie mix.
Exciting Results to Date:
We're thrilled to report significant positive changes on the property! We've observed a notable increase in wildlife activity, including sightings of majestic owls, elusive red fox, wild turkey, abundant deer, and thriving pheasant populations. Furthermore, the native prairie planting has established remarkably well, indicating a strong foundation for a diverse and resilient ecosystem.
What's Next:
Our ongoing management phase will focus on nurturing this developing ecosystem. This includes monitoring for and controlling any invasive species, and potentially implementing other strategies to ensure the continued success and maturation of this vibrant landscape.
